Quayside Village Cohousing

Completed July 1998
510 Chesterfield Avenue, North Vancouver, BC, Canada

Located in Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood, within walking distance of the public market, SeaBus, parks, and schools.

The development sits on a compact sub-quarter-acre site and includes 19 mixed residential units (ranging from bachelor suites to 3-bedroom townhouses), a 2,500sqft Common House, and 650sqft of commercial space. The common house includes a kitchen, dining room, spacious lounge with fireplace, guest room, and office.

Four units were sold as affordable housing under BC Housing criteria and one universally accessible rental unit was retained by the community.

Sustainability features include salvaged materials from the original on-site homes, a greywater recycling system, shared gardens producing year-round produce, and an exemplary waste program requiring just one residential garbage can for all 19 homes.

Additional shared amenities include a central courtyard, rooftop deck and meditation room with spectacular views of the mountains, Burrard Inlet and downtown Vancouver.

Ronaye Matthew’s company, Cohousing Development Consulting, provided cohousing development and community-building services from July 1996 through completion in July 1998.
