Completed January 2016
6681 Horne Road, Sooke, BC, Canada
Designed as a neighbourhood of strata-titled housing for people in the second half of life — affordable, environmentally friendly, and socially supportive, enabling residents to age in place within a mutually supportive community. The 2.75-acre waterfront property sits within walking distance of Sooke Town Centre, with easy access to grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, restaurants, coffee shops, and a post office. The site features a private dock with waterfront gazebo, and the original resort building was incorporated as the common house. Materials and systems were selected to achieve Built Green Canada Gold standards.
The 31 homes span five floor plans — ranging from approximately 600 sq ft (one bedroom) to 960 sq ft (two bedroom plus den) — in a mix of duplex, fourplex, and apartment-style units, all with large south-facing decks and views of Sooke Harbour. Universal design features are incorporated throughout. Common amenities include gardens, a workshop, exercise room, art room, kitchen and dining space, two guest rooms, a library, multi-purpose rooms, and a co-care studio suite to support members’ needs as they age.
Ronaye Matthew’s company, Cohousing Development Consulting, facilitated site selection and land purchase and provided full-service cohousing development management from January 2013 through completion in January 2016.
